Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger had to fight back tears when he was honored last week as the most performed songwriter in the 30-year history of the Canadian performance rights organization SOCAN. Of the nearly 160,000 members, Mr. Kroeger tops them all.
Kroeger got a standing ovation from the 700 songwriters and music industry professionals in attendance, then followed it with a 10-minute speech that was reportedly both funny and highly emotional. Afterwards he told Billboard he was “trying not to cry the whole time” he was up there.
“So I hid behind my comedy and I tried to make everybody laugh in the room, instead of having tears streaming down my face, because I’m just so honored because this is the thing that I geek out on the most.”
