In an interview with Maxim Magazine Lars Ulrich was asked to name his favorite Metallica album cover.
“The Load and Reload albums with the amazing pieces by Andres Serrano. They will always hold a special place in my heart. I love him as an artist. I love the imagery. I love the fact that we saw Serrano through as the cover art for those two records. Those are probably my two favorites.”
Those two album covers from 1996 and 1997 definitely were not popular with a lot of Metallica fans. The Load cover used a photo called “Semen and Blood 3,” which used cow blood and Serrano’s own semen between two plates of Plexiglas, and Reload used a Serrano photo that included urine and cow blood.
