Had the chance to go to Phoenix, AZ over New Years to officially meet and hang out with the band The Black Moods, (full conversation below.) The Black Moods are a blues leaning rock band heavily influenced by The Gin Blossoms.
Lead singer Josh Kennedy, “I was in by bedroom playing ‘Cocaine’ by Eric Clapton for like 8 hours straight when my mom, err my dad hollered at me and was like ‘hey come here and check out this band,’ and the Gin Blossoms were on the American Music Awards. So I came out and they were playing ‘Hey Jealousy’ and my dad was just like ‘this is great music you know, you could write stuff like this.’
They are currently in the studio with legendary producer Johnny K, (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, ect.) Their latest single “Bella Donna” has begun blowing up in certain places and Josh said this about the tune:
“Actually grew up on Creedence Cleerwater and Hendrix and all that kind of stuff, and then I skipped everything but Guns N’ Roses in the 80’s and went right to the Blossoms (Gin Blossoms,) The Counting Crows and Nirvana and Pearl Jam and all that kinda stuff in the 90’s which really influenced me as a song writer.” He goes on to say “We kind of combine all that stuff and with Bella Donna being the way it is, it’s definitely just raw and you know Johnny K just brought the best out of in that song.”
The Black Moods will be releasing a lot more Johnny K produced music in 2019.
