It’s no secret that rock music is suffering in the popularity category as much of the music world is dominated by the giants of Pop, Rap and Country. Rock struggles to find its foot-hold in an ever changing environment.
A band that doesn’t quite suffer from this particular problem is Bring Me The Horizon (BMTH). Starting off as a run-of-the-mill deathcore band, BMTH has come to position themselves as one of the most influential and promising bands in the genre. They have done this through writing catchy, meaningful tunes while still maintaining the atmosphere and attitude of a heavy rock band. They don’t shy away from experimentation and continually push the boundaries on every record. 2019’s new album Amo should be no different once it drops on January 25th.
In an interview with MusicWeek, BMTH discusses why they think Rock music has so many problems in today’s market, especially when it comes to streaming.
According to keyboardist Jordan Fish Rock music suffers because “…it’s mostly shite.”
“The people who are writing the songs aren’t good enough songwriters. I don’t love the music on Hot Hits UK but they are well-written songs and that’s something a lot of rock bands don’t appreciate. The craft of writing good songs is hard.”
Band leader and vocalist Oli Sykes adds:
“It’s not a very rock thing to have people writing your songs or your lyrics for you. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a little bit of help, or some outside perspective, but a lot of our contemporaries now just have people straight-up writing songs for them. I find that bonkers.”
It’s no secret that bands, usually at the behest of a label, hire outside songwriters. You would be stunned to know that a good chunk of your favorite songs weren’t actually written by the band you think they were.
It seems that BMTH can personally attest to the success of crafting a great song when one considers that their latest single “Mantra” is one of the heaviest songs on Spotify’s Hot Hits playlist in the UK.
