On September 21, 1993, Nirvana released what ended up being their 3rd and final album, In Utero. The album spawned iconic songs like “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies,” but the celebration of the record was short-lived as founder and frontman Kurt Cobain died via suicide less than a year later. The album was produced by famed indie producer Steve Albini from Chicago and he along with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic joined former Late Night TV host Conon O’Brien on his podcast Conon O’Brien Needs a Friend for an hour-long conversation about the album, the band, the 30th anniversary edition and of course light-hearted ribs.
The trio spoke at length about the In Utero recording process and comparisons to Nevermind; how they killed time in the studio by prank calling Gene Simmons, Evan Dando, and Eddie Vedder. Check out a couple of clips from the episode below.
The 30th-anniversary Deluxe edition of In Utero will be released this Friday and it includes 53 previously unreleased tracks including two complete concerts, one from LA in ’93 and their final-ever performance in Seattle in ’94.
