It has been just about a year since I last spoke with Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox and in that time things have gotten pretty crazy for the former lead singer of iwrestledabearonce. From being a band that mostly lived online to one of the most exciting acts in modern metal, it truly has been a hell of a year. Courtney, though, feels a positive fear of the future.
‘…I still feel very new to this…I feel insecure but in like a good way…I don’t think the position our band is in, I still think we have so much to prove.’
She goes on to talk about appreciating where they’re at but also knows that the pressure for a second album is very real. She is very excited to get back to her creative bubble to get back into writing mode. Spiritbox has been on some pretty major festivals and when we talked about that I asked her what her dream would be for those.
‘To me it’s more like political, I just want that kind of influence on festivals to kind of change up the bill and have the bill more represent more of the demographic. I think that people are really more willing to take chances on the under bill but headliners are always pretty monolithic in who they are…I wanna throw my hat n the ring to show that yea women can headline festivals and it’s going to be great…’
She goes on to throw support behind bands like Turnstile and Loathe as well as Bring Me The Horizon whom they shared the stage with in Malta. We talked about what would be the heaviest band to share the stage with and we both agreed that it would be a combination of Gojira and Meshuggah. Such a fun chat, check it out below!
