All we have heard over the last couple of years about Soundgarden’s new music is that it’s being held up in lawsuits from both Vicky Cornell, the widow of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, and the rest of the band. There are seven new songs in total that Chris had finished for a new Soundgarden record before he passed away. Speaking to USA Today Vicky Cornell said:
“All of Chris’s music, including Soundgarden, will see the light of day because there’s nothing in the world that lifts me most than sharing Chris’s gifts, having people speak his name, and having his music out there. He’s alive that way and his legacy lives on.”
Vicky had filed a lawsuit in December of 2019 against the remaining members of Soundgarden, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron stating that she and the estate of Chris Cornell had been owed royalties that had not yet been received. The band responded with the fact that they also had been owed royalties and nothing could be paid out until all expenses were covered. The case is currently still in court.
Recently the estate did release a Chris Cornell cover’s album No One Sings Like You Anymore. Vicky spoke about this album as well:
“This record showcases Chris’ vocal abilities and the breadth of what he was able to do. There’s a reason why he is one of the greatest voices of his time. What’s really special about this is you get to see a different side of Chris. It gives you a glimpse into his world and lets you see him as a fan. Fans have their playlists and this would maybe be Chris’ (playlist): what resonated with him personally, and what he thought could be fun and add his stamp on.”
It features his cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” along with Guns ‘N’ Roses’ “Patience” and 8 more songs.
