Deftones announced their “Adopt-a-Dot” campaign, where fans can donate $20 to “adopt” one of the 12,995 dots that make up the album cover for Ohms. When a dot is adopted, you can upload a photo to be part of that pixelated dot that when combined with the others, makes up Frank Maddocks’ artwork. According to Maddocks:
“Ohms album art is an iconic rendering of a suspended, chance moment in time. As with DEFTONES music and lyrics, the definitive meaning of the imagery invites and relies on interpretation from the viewer. From a dreamy gaze above, to sadness, hope, despair, optimism and a longing for connection, the emotions conveyed are endless and infinitely evolving.”
The proceeds from the campaign go to UC Davis Children’s Hospital and Live Nation’s Crew Nation global relief fund for live music crews who have been impacted by COVID-19. The “adoption” can be make at Deftones.com/Adopt.
Deftones upcoming album, Ohms, will be released on September 25th. Last week, they released the second single from the album “Genesis”. The video for that song can be seen below. Due to Coronavirus, Deftones were forced to reschedule their tour with Gojira and Poppy. That show is now scheduled for Saturday, August 14, 2021 at The Rave.
Deftones frontman Chino Moreno also recently said that the late Stone Temple Pilots singer, Scott Weiland, had an uncredited cameo on “Rx Queen” from the White Pony album. Moreno said that Weiland met up with him at the studio and he played some of the rough music for Weiland. Then Scott grabbed a mic and starting scatting over it, which led to him harmonizing with Chino on the chorus. Moreno said when he mixed the record that the thought it sounded good, and left it.
So the next time you listen to “Rx Queen”, listen for Scott Weiland’s timbre and the way he sings and you should hear him. Chino calls it their little Easter Egg, in a way.
