While more people stayed at home in March, the state saw a big jump in revenue for taxes on beer, liquor, wine, cigarettes, and other tobacco products.
The state revenue department brought in $72.8 million from so-called “sin taxes” last month. That’s 62 percent higher than the nearly $45 million total from the same month last year.
There’s a one-month delay in state tax collections, so the amount is for March.
Overall tax collections, including income and corporate, fell 50 percent, but the deadline to pay was extended to July 15th.
