The death of Appleton firefighter Mitch Lundgaard one year ago today is leading to changes in how the department handles calls.
Lundgaard was shot and killed, after crews revived a man on an overdose call.
Fire Chief Jeremy Hansen says their protocols are a little different, and there’s a heightened awareness. He says no matter what the incident, there is a potential for harm to the firefighters.
Hansen says the shooting was studied by departments across the country, and they’ve learned from what happened.
The department held a formal ceremony today, honoring Lundgaard. The city also unveiled a sign at the future Lundgaard Park, next to Fire Station No. 6 on Appleton’s northeast side.
