Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich says the decision to only have two polling locations for yesterday’s election was the city’s last resort.
The final person finished voting at Green Bay West High School around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, 4-1/2 hours after the polls closed.
Long lines wrapped around East and West high schools all day. Genrich says the wait times were devastating to watch, and he’s sure they were much more difficult to experience.
He reports they were planning to use the four high school gyms, but they kept losing more experienced and trained poll workers.
Genrich says they had the option of using inexperienced workers, but he and the city clerk didn’t feel comfortable putting them in a dangerous and stressful environment. He says National Guard members, city workers, and community volunteers were offering to help.
