Governor Evers wants lawmakers to call off in-person voting on Tuesday, and have an all-mail election instead.
He’s calling a special session of the Legislature for tomorrow, to take up the late changes.
The state would have until May 19th to mail an absentee ballot to every registered voter. People would have to return them to their clerk by May 26th.
Evers says lawmakers are urging people to stay home, and now they need to do their part. He says he’s asking for the late change because some larger communities, like Green Bay and Milwaukee, are consolidating polling locations. He’s concerned that will lead to large crowds, and a higher risk of spreading COVID-19.
Evers says all current office holders would stay on, until the end of May.
Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos say Tuesday’s election should go on, as planned.
