A state health expert believes there are three main differences that make coronavirus more dangerous than the flu.
Dr. Ryan Westergaard of the Department of Health Services says the death rate for COVID-19 is at least 10 times higher. About one in 100 people die after getting coronavirus, compared to 1 in 1,000 for the flu.
Westergaard says people with coronavirus might not have symptoms for a few days, and they can unknowingly spread it to others during that time.
He says there also isn’t a vaccine for COVID-19, or a way to treat it.
