The date which millions of Americans dread, the tax filing deadline, will come three months later because of the coronavirus outbreak. Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin announced today that tax filers will not be required to file their tax forms by April 15th but will instead have until July 15th.
“All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties,” Mnuchin tweeted.
On Tuesday, Mnuchin had announced that tax filers who owed taxes would be allowed to defer those payments until July 15th but at that time the filing deadline itself had remained April 15th. But again, the filing deadline for all taxpayers and businesses is now extended to July 15th. The Senate is expected to take up legislation which may extend tax payment deferments to October 15th.
Tax officials stress that anyone who expects to receive a tax refund is encouraged to file as soon as possible because the Internal Revenue Service is not delaying refunds. More than 50 million filers have already received their refunds, Mnuchin said.
