Majority Republicans in the Assembly are offering some accommodations to a disabled lawmaker, but Democrats are speaking out against other rule changes.
Democratic Rep. Jimmy Anderson of Fitchburg is disabled, and he’ll now be able to call into committee meetings, if necessary.
The rules package also gives Republicans unlimited chances to take veto override votes.
Minority Leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh accuses Assembly Speaker Robin Vos of being “drunk with power.”
Democrats are concerned that Republicans could quickly call an override vote, if enough Democrats are gone, to give the GOP the necessary two-thirds majority.
Majority Leader Jim Steineke of Vandenbroek responded to the claims, pointing out that Democrats wanted to vote on Medicaid expansion “800 times over the course of the last few years.”
