Yes it is true! Spiritbox will actually will play before the Grammys! They will be performing during the Premiere Ceremony which will be on February 1st. They have been nominated 3 times in their relatively short career and this year they are up for Best Metal Performance with their song ‘Soft Spine’ off of their Tsunami Sea record. The other nominees are Dream Theater, Ghost, Sleep Token and Turnstile.
I had a chance to talk with lead singer Courtney LaPlante after the album was released to get a better understanding of what the piece of work meant to her and the rest of the band.
‘Those feelings that make you feel extremely isolated, which is also what the album is about…it turns out that it’s a very universal feeling. So it’s weird something that makes you feel so alone is actually…brings out a lot of empathy and a lot of people relate to it.’
The album itself brings meanings and themes beyond with the usage of words as she explains. Mike Stringer, the bands guitarist and Courtney’s husband, uses music as a way to communicate his complex emotions.
‘The same way that I can explain myself to anyone is singing and writing lyrics and it’s the only way I can express myself. The only way Michael is able to express himself outwardly is through music. So every little sound…he’s like me he has difficulty expressing or feeling ashamed of the sadness or anger or isolation and so he, just like I do the singing parts, every single piece of music you are hearing every single little noise is like so intentional by him to be like a vehicle for what I’m saying to come across like the subconsciousness part. My part is like the conscious part that you’re going to absorb and then Michael is like always trying to push subconsciously that message within the musical part.’
Though we won’t have a Wisconsin tour date with Spiritbox we can at least see them on TV scaring people who just want to ask what dress people are wearing, and that’s nice.
