Dave Mustaine did an interview with Rolling Stone magazine to tell us more about the final Megadeth album that will come out in 2026. One of the biggest shocks is that there is a Metallica song on the track list. A song Dave is credited on. A song called “Ride The Lightning”. Dave explains why he chose this song and why he wanted to do it now.
“I wanted to do something to close the circle on my career right now, since it started off with [Mustaine’s band before Metallica] Panic and several of the songs that ended up in the Metallica repertoire, I wanted to do something that I felt would be a good song.”
Mustiane goes on to explain that Megadeth will not play the song live nor does Metallica know anything about the cover. Saying he hasn’t spoken with James Hetfield in quite some time, adding this.
“So I was hoping that we could get his approval on this before we release the track. But when it turned out the way that it did, I think there were so many people that were happy that we did this, that we just went for it. And I’ll be more than happy to talk to him when I get the opportunity, but I don’t have his number anymore.”
He does conclude his interview on a less bitter sounding point adding this.
“I wanted to pay tribute to the band, and just now that I’m getting ready to hang my guitar up, I wanted to make sure that nothing is left unsaid.”
So we shall see if Metallica gives their blessing on this but the odds that Mustaine would care are probably near zero.
