The Devil Wears Prada has been a band that has been evolving since the day they began recording music. Relying heavily on keyboards in their early days you could see that there would be more to TDWP than breakdowns and call outs. As Jeremy Depoyster, one of the two original members of the band, states ‘This is a new era of TDWP.’ and when I asked him to expound upon that idea he said this.
‘It just kind of means wanting to push the boundaries of our genre…keep things movin’ I guess (laughs)’
He explains that he still considers them Metal-core but also details that genre is fluid and they like making all kinds of sounds.
‘…We’ve always just been someone that takes influences from everywhere and just mangles them up and tries to do stuff, sometimes people will be like “Yo, you guys aren’t even heavy anymore” or something and I’m just like “I just made an EP about zombies like two years ago…” I feel like when we go into the studio I just wanna do something that I’ve never heard before and try to push the envelope and so we’ve never written anything we didn’t want to write at the time… ‘
We talked about the newest single ‘Ritual’ and what the mindset was going into the writing of it, Jeremy said this.
‘I feel like when we started to write the new stuff including ‘Ritual’ it was more like “ok well that may be how I feel but I kind of need to figure out a way to get through it…Maybe you get in your car on the way to work and you listen to this music that really resonates with you but then it’s like, you gotta go to work, and then you gotta go hang out with your family and you have to show up for your friends…so it’s trying to reckon with how to do that and maybe not even having an answer.(laughs)’
Which might be the most spot on realization of growing older I’ve heard from a musician. I have grown up with The Devil Wears Prada and it seems like every time they evolve their sound it’s at the same time my tastes evolve too. There’s an interesting part where we talk about the ‘When We Were Young’ festival and how they are going to play the entire Plagues record front to back. Spoiler here: He isn’t a super fan of the concept. Check out the rest of the chat here and tune in to the new track ‘Ritual’ below.
