Last year Avenged Sevenfold released one of the most divisive, obscure, creative and wild albums in recent memory, …Life Is But a Dream. An album that continued progression of innovative metal they began on The Stage. When asked what this last album was about and how it’s theme’s came to be Johnny Christ said this.
‘I think the overarching philosophy on this is, especially lyrically, is just the absurdism and coming to grips with what we believe through our own lives is at the end it’s just the end…there is an actual distinct and definite end to everything…and coming to grips with that…and dropping into the abyss of nothingness…’
The song ‘Cosmic’ always stood out to me as the track that fully embraced and expounded upon that philosophy. When I talked with Zacky Vengeance he really got into how their entire mindset was different during the writing and recording.
‘As you get older and have successes you have formulas that work and songs that work and people want to pigeon hole you and stick you in that box and if you’re willing to break free from those shackles and just say “Hey there’s no rules as to what our band can be and what it should be or what this album should sound like.” It’s exciting it makes you excited, you can’t wait to try different things. You push yourself…push the boundaries musically and performance wise but you incorporate new things…It was exciting not knowing what the future holds is the entire reason why you pick up an instrument in the first place, or at least it should be.’
All of that to say this. ‘Cosmic’ was my favorite track on the album, it certainly won’t be everyone’s, and this video encapsulates the very essence this song brings forth. Stare deep and sit back.
