It takes a lot of guts to just throw one song out there and see what happens, and that’s just what Unpeople decided to do in 2023. Jake Crawford and Luke Caley formally of the band Press To Meco joined me over Zoom to give a little insight about their newest musical venture.
‘It was a long time coming…it was about two years in the making from when we decided we were going to take on this endeavor. And now to finally have it out into the world is quite a nice feeling. Especially with all the positivity we’ve been receiving…It’s incredibly humbling.
Luke continues by describing how this all came to be.
We decided we were going to do the project, Unpeople, two years ago and it was a very slow build…we’ve both played in bands are whole lives so I think it was a great chance to sort of accumulate all of our knowledge, well at least we feel like we have a bit of knowledge(laughs)…and put it all into practice and just not rush anything and just release stuff when it felt right. That included being patient, getting the right lineup together, recruiting Meg and Ritchie, who are both amazing in their own regards…We got a few messages asking how we’ve got everything sounding so (good) and you’ve got Sharptone behind the band, it’s like it took two years, it wasn’t like we made a band the month before and released a single, so I think…having that payoff at the end of a long, long time of putting the hard work in.’
Jake chimed in to reassure everyone that there are indeed more songs coming.
‘Very considered work as well, it was a pretty meticulous process in terms of to getting the right lineup, making sure the songs are as good as they can be, yes there are more songs…’
The word unpeople is defined as this: a group of people regarded as politically unimportant or without rights. I asked Jake and Luke if that definition is the thesis of Unpeople and Jake said this.
‘I’d say it’s not necessarily the over arching thing but it definitely has enough connotations that span a lot of what we feel and talk about in the music.’
Unpeople is a very exciting band and I’m so excited to see what comes next!
