During Decker’s week at Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, California, he had the opportunity to sit down with some amazing artists. One of those artists was Chris Daughtry.
When asked about their latest song, “Artificial,” released on August 11, Daughtry described it as his “favorite thing he’s ever done.”
The song coincides with the situation with Chat GPT and AI in regards to the artist’s voices being stolen, and Daughtry questioned how far it will go and where it will end. He explained that his producer’s wife had dinner with AI coders, and to quote her, he said, “This isn’t shit. There is stuff being worked on that will blow your mind.”
Immediately, like many of us, they started thinking of the worst case scenario, “we create machine, machine destroys us, and you know, end of the world.”
They decided they wanted to write a song about that exact situation, and “Artificial” was born. Daughtry explained that they had a riff that sounded dark and reminded him of the Imperial March. He said, “We had always been so safe it felt like we wanted something jarring. Something that didn’t have any hope at all. I had a lot of fun writing it and even more fun doing the video.”
He explained that this track is sonically indicative of the rest of the album. “The last couple years have been, you know, I’ve gone through a lot,” he said, “so a lot of that is going to certainly make its way into the lyrics and already has.”
“It’s a heavy record.”
When asked what album sonically inspired him to do this album, Daughtry said, “I’m a huge Sleep Token fan. I love that band so much man, I think what they’re doing is one of the most creative things in music in a long time.”
Although Daughtry said there is still a lot of work to do on the album, they are hoping to get it out before next summer.
