Johnny Hawkins is a unique guy in the world of rock. I asked him what the ideas were when writing the song ‘Tired of Winning’ and he gave this answer.
‘…Kind of a birds eye view of humanity…just kinda taking a step back and looking at what it’d be like to observe us as creatures as if we were like a god or an alien or something you know above and beyond just kinda looking down and thinking, you know, “are these guys gonna run this into the ground? Are they gonna make it out of this?”
When asked about his favorite track off the new album is he said the title track ‘Spirits’ mostly because of a specific line from the chorus.
‘There’s a lyric in the chorus that goes ‘something’s in the way something has to change’…the second part of the chorus it goes into ‘the bending in my back, from the weight on my soul, been looking at the world with one eye closed. It’s a little bit heavenly a little bit sick.’ And it kind of touches on this duality theme, and that’s another theme of the album….’
We then talked about the metaphor of seeing the world with one eye closed, how he had got the line from a philosophical stand point but also from a physical point when he realized during the lockdown he was drinking too much. He noticed he’d close one of his eyes and his friends would call him ‘Popeye’. Lots of fascinating thoughts in this chat, check it out!
