Taylor Momsen and The Pretty Reckless have been off the road for nearly 5 years and in that time a lot has happened. Hard to believe I know. So I asked her what it was like to be back on the stage doing her rock n roll thing and she had this to say.
‘It was awesome…it feels so good to be back on the road and you know doing what we love.’
The influence of grunge is hard to miss in Pretty Reckless music and this time around Taylor and the crew recruited the help of Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron of Soundgarden to record ‘Only Love Can Save Me Now’ which Momsen says was surreal watching them play. She also said they had recorded the album in Seattle in the legendary studio, London Bridges, where Peal Jam’s TenĀ and Alice In Chains had recorded.
‘I mean just walking into that place was just surreal…I don’t know if everyone believes this but I think places are kind of like people and they hold memories and you can feel that vibe when you walk into a place like that…’
Momsen let me in on a little secret of the album which holds a tribute to their late producer Kato Khandwala who passed away in 2020 following a motorcycle accident. The tribute is in the opening track when you hear footsteps.
‘Kato, our producer who passed, footsteps is the first thing you hear on the record and those open the song… so I get to walk on stage to his footsteps and it’s like he’s there…’
A truly inspiring homage to a passed friend. We also chatted about a record that has yet to be named that was recorded during the pandemic lockdown. It will feature covers and alternative versions of songs. Momsen didn’t give up any full details on it or when it’s coming out but did describe it as ‘sideways’.
