Appleton firefighters are crediting a broken water line for limiting the damage from a fire north of the downtown.
City utility workers discovered about $5,000 in fire damage in the basement of a home in the 200 block of W. Hancock Street this morning. They were investigating, after seeing an abnormally large amount of water had been used for five straight days.
The water put out the electrical fire.
No one had been in the home for more than a week.
