Winnebago County Health Director Doug Gieryn is defending a proposed law that would allow him to issue and enforce “safer at home” orders.
Gieryn points out that several other communities give their health department that authority. Gieryn attempted to put a “safer at home” order in place last month when the state Supreme Court struck down a similar directive from the Department of Health Services but it was repealed when officials discovered he didn’t have that authority. The Winnebago County Board could consider giving him that authority next month.
