Green Bay police officers are taking extra precautions because of recent cases of people spitting on them.
Police Chief Andrew Smith is encouraging the officers to press charges. The penalty is up to 3-1/2 years in prison, and a $10,000 fine.
Smith says he’s especially concerned with the threat of COVID-19. Whenever officers get out of their squad car, they’re required to wear a mask and protective glasses.
The Brown County District Attorney’s office recently charged three people with spitting on an officer. Prosecutors say the suspects told the officers they had contact with people infected with coronavirus.
