Governor Evers says the steps the state are taking to deal with coronavirus are putting lives first, and not political power.
He’s accusing Majority Republicans in the Legislature of attempting a “power grab” by filing a lawsuit challenging the extension of the “safer at home” order.”
GOP lawmakers argue Evers doesn’t have the authority to push the order to late May. They say he’s only allowed to take that step until May 11th, because that’s the end of his 60-day emergency declaration.
Evers says governors and health officials in other states are taking similar steps to Wisconsin. He questions why Republicans think powers that exist around the country shouldn’t be in place in Wisconsin.
Evers says he has no regrets about extending the “safer at home” order to May 26th. He says people are dying every day from coronavirus, and in his words, “the more we screw around with it, the more people die.”
