If you ever wanted to be a serious collector of comic books but didn’t know where to start, now’s your chance. That is, if you’re at least a millionaire.
Sotheby’s is selling a complete private collection of DC Comics through their auction house. “Complete” might be an understatement. The collector – Ian Levine – has every DC Comics-published book ever released starting in 1935 with DC’s first ever book – New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine No. 1 – and everything the publisher released thereafter until 2014. DC Comics owns the rights to such characters as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Joker, Harley Quinn and countless others.
The collection totals more than 40,000 individual books including the first appearances of most if not all of the DC superhero lineup listed prior. High-quality copies of Action Comics #1 and Detective Comics #27 (Superman and Batman’s first appearances, respectively) have individually sold in the millions and copies of both are included in this collection. A synopsis of the collection is offered by Sotheby’s and available here. Obviously, only serious inquiries are being entertained. But if you are, don’t expect to pick and choose your favorites to purchase: The collection is not being parted out. It is being sold as a lot. And that means you’ll need a lot of money in order to snag arguably the most comprehensive comic book collection to date.
