A state agency is getting so many calls about unemployment benefits that they’re overwhelming the system.
Governor Evers says nearly 116,000 new applications came in to the Department of Workforce Development last week. He says people made more than 1.5 million calls over those seven days.
Evers says last Thursday morning, about 440,000 calls came in over a four-hour period. At times, they were getting 160 calls per second.
The agency is shifting workers around and hiring more staff to try to keep up.
The department is urging people to file for unemployment online, through the DWD website.
