Appleton leaders are expected to decide tonight if the city will take an official stance opposing the possible deportation of Hmong refugees.
Ald. Maiyoua Thao says her family escaped from Laos when she was three. She shared her story at a meeting last week.
Thao says her family was hiding one night, and she was being too loud. She says other families forced her father to do something, and he had to suffocate her, until she passed out.
She says she’s lucky to have survived.
A number of local governments have already taken a stance against possible deportations, including Oshkosh and Outagamie County.
