Appleton’s library may be the latest to look at fines.
Kaukauna eliminated them at the beginning of the year, becoming the first in the Fox Cities to take that step.
Appleton Public Library Director Colleen Rortvedt says they could still control how overdue books are handled. She says they could stop people from checking out more items, if they haven’t returned some things.
Rortvedt says research shows fines can limit library access for people that are struggling financially, and children.
The library board could consider different possibilities this year.
Over the past year, the library collected about $37,000 in fines.
