28 years after it’s release, Nirvana’s hit single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” has hit the 1 billion view mark on YouTube.
The song serves as the opening track and lead single from the band’s second album, Nevermind. The unexpected success of Nevermind threw Nirvana into the mainstream and really marked the beginning of grunge music’s popularity. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was nominated for two Grammy Awards: Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal and Best Rock Song. In 2008, Entertainment Weekly named Nirvana’s loss in the Best Rock Song Category to Eric Clapton, as one of the 10 biggest upsets in Grammy history. The song won two MTV Video Music Awards and received numerous other accolades.
