More people spent time in emergency shelters in the Fox Cities last year, compared to the previous six years.
Workers for the Fox Cities LIFE Study went over the numbers from facilities in the Appleton and Oshkosh areas.
Joe Mauthe of Pillars says their numbers were up 10 percent last year.
He says there are two times as many low-income households than affordable rental units. He says that really stymies people while they’re trying to make the transition from an episode of homelessness to finding more stable housing.
In Winnebago County, 43 percent of renters are putting more than 30 percent of their income toward housing. The rental rates there are lower than in Outagamie and Calumet counties.
