In 1997, Beanie Babies were the must have toy, Titanic won 11 Oscars and Seinfeld was the show you couldn’t miss. This week in 1997, The Spice Girls ruled the charts with “Wannabe,” but the rock charts brought Sublime’s “Santeria” up 2 spots to the number one position.
Santeria was released as a single in January of 1997, following the 1996 death of Sublime frontman, Bradley Nowell. The song served as the 2nd single from the band’s self-titled final album. “Santeria” had some crossover success in the spring of 1997, making its way to the the Top 5 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart as well as hitting number 43 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart.
